What is Counselling?
Counselling is often referred to as the talking treatment. It can help you overcome emotional difficulties and free you from unhelpful ways of
feeling, thinking and behaving.
It might focus on:
• Current problems and decision making
• Issues or traumas from the past which still affect you
• Particular relationships in your life
• Feelings of inner conflict
Counselling offers you a safe “no strings attached” environment that allows you a space where, in partnership with your counsellor, you can explore your feelings and situation.
The counsellor acts as a facilitator. She/he will not tell you what to do, but will provide an accepting, non-judgemental atmosphere in which you will be helped to identify your own strengths, look at problem-solving strategies or develop insights, to give you better control of your life.
Who is Counselling For?
Prejudice about emotional distress sometimes stops people from using talking treatments. They may feel that it is a form of weakness to seek counselling. The truth is that, anyone can suffer emotional distress at some point in their lives. It can take courage to face up to this and
approach someone for help.
Most people feel they benefit from talking treatments and find that
sometimes it’s good just to get something off their chest. Many people have found that counselling has helped them to change their lives for the better.
Do Talking Treatments Work?
Talking treatments do work, but as with any type of therapy much
depends on the individual. For many people, counselling has helped to change their lives profoundly.
As a result of counselling individuals feel they are better equipped to handle future difficulties which may occur in their lives.
It helps if you are clear about what you would like to achieve through counselling. This will assist you to be more focused and get the most out of your sessions.
