Who are HiWay?

We are Mind Monmouthshire’s community outreach team.

We aim to help you to achieve goals that are important to YOU.

We are based upon a PERSON CENTRED approach meaning that we value your CHOICE and RESPECT your views.

HiWay believes in a recovery based approach promoting the importance of being content personally, occupationally, and socially.

HiWay recognises potential, regardless of ongoing or recurring symptoms
of mental illness.

What will HiWay do?

• Develop your self confidence
• Meet new people
• Do something that you enjoy
• Develop your working skills
• Develop your communication skills
• Reach your potential
• Achieve physical and mental wellbeing

How does HiWay operate?

A trained Outreach Caseworker can:
• Work with you to set achievable and maintainable goal
• Access community activities
• Measure your achievement
• Work with you to obtain occupation (paid or unpaid)
• Empower you to further your education
• Aid you to get involved with exercise

What HiWay can’t do for clients

Our guiding principle is always doing with not doing for. The long-term aim
is that you are enabled to do things for yourself.

There are some things that we cannot do. These are: -
X Personal care e.g. bathing, dressing
X Counselling
X Nursing
X Befriending
X Childcare
X Provide a taxi service

HiWay clients should:

• Currently have an outreach service need;

• Be aged 18 or over;

• Be involved with mental health services;

• Be experiencing or recovering from diagnosed severe or enduring mental health difficulties;

• Not require personal care;

• Have a willingness to work towards community involvement -
in regards to occupation, education, exercise, volunteering, or social
activity;

• Not have primary issues which are related to drug or alcohol;

• Be resident in Monmouthshire but not in staffed accommodation;

• Not present an unacceptable risk to a lone worker;

• Give consent to referral, as evidenced by signature on referral form

• Behave in a respectful way to staff and be prepared to engage with support offered.

Mind Monmouthshire will not offer, or will withdraw, a caseworker from clients who do not satisfy these conditions.
