Self Management Courses

We provide a number of Self-Management Courses including:

Depression Management  Anxiety Management

These courses are between 6-8 weeks in duration and run on a weekly basis in community venues throughout Monmouthshire.

Each weekly session lasts for 2 hours.

These courses are designed to address all the common challenges faced by many people on a day-to-day basis.  The aim is to help participants within a group format make changes to their lives in a planned and achievable way.  With each course, sessions build on the previous one with exercises given at the end for the participants/group to reflect upon the following week.

Each person remains in control and is responsible for themselves at all times.  The group format is a useful method of enabling people in managing their condition/problem.  Peer support plays a large role in helping participants to achieve and maintain good mental health.

Our courses are FREE, relaxed and informal.

Our courses are very relaxed and informal, with no homework.

Depression Management

This 8 week course aims to help participants to gain a greater understanding of the courses and effects of depression and to provide an opportunity to learn effective relaxation and other coping techniques. Please click here for the course Overview.

What will you learn on the course:

  • Understand rational and irrational thoughts
  • Gain an understanding of how self-esteem and depression are linked.
  • Recognise the benefits of exercise and daily activities. 
  • Understand the vital role of sleep.
  • Understand worry and how it can be managed.
  • Gain and understanding of the importance of goal setting and planning.

Anxiety Management

This 8 week course aims to help participants gain a greater understanding of the causes and effects of anxiety and to provide an opportunity to learn effective relaxation and other coping techniques.  Please click here for the course Overview.

  • Understand what anxiety is
  • identify some causes of anxiety
  • the difference between rational and irrational thoughts
  • challenging irrational thoughts
  • how to combine goal setting and planning to reduce anxiety
  • understand the vital role of sleep

Confidence Building

This 8 week course aims to help participants build on feelings of self-worth, and to work to understand and breakdown the negative patterns associated with lack of confidence.  Please click here for the course Overview.

  • discover some techniques for improving self-esteem
  • strategies for being assertive
  • why setting goals is important
  • how to deal with thoughts of failure and self-criticism

Understanding Anger

Courses in October 2019 and January 2020

This 6 week course aims to get participants to understand what is anger, the effects of anger, and how to control and manage anger.  Please click here for the course Overview.

  • Understand the triggers for our anger
  • To understand how perception plays a part
  • To understand how our beliefs and moods affect us
  • To understand the importance of behaviour
  • To understand how to change the negative to a positive
  • To understand the importance of problem solving

  • How to avoid angry dialogues
  • To provide some useful things to remember

Practising mindfulness can help us; feel calmer and less stressed, more able to choose how to respond to our thoughts and emotions, cope with difficult or unhelpful thoughts and be kinder to ourselves.
